Moffitt Cancer Center, Florida's sole National Cancer Institute-accredited Comprehensive Cancer Center, aimed to revamp its website to reflect its advanced research and medical innovations. The goal was a cleaner, modern design that appeals to patients, families, and researchers.
The previous design of Moffitt's website was conventional and outdated, contrasting with the innovative and future-facing organization. The redesign aimed to project a softer, warmer and welcoming vibe rather than the impersonal, clinical feeling common among healthcare providers.
The system was built to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards and comply with ADA requirements—a non-negotiable for an organization serving patients navigating some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Colour contrast ratios, focus states, semantic structure, and touch target sizing were all considered at the component level, not patched in after the fact. The goal was a site that worked for everyone, not just users who arrive healthy and patient.
The design system offers content editors a comprehensive toolkit with mobile-first templates and easy-to-use components. This structure streamlines page creation, enabling a focus on content. As the website scales, the design system ensures organic evolution while maintaining Moffitt Cancer Center's brand identity.
